Prevent the dismantling of culture
Dear dance community, dear audience,
We want to draw attention to the current financial and cultural-political situation and highlight the profound consequences that the planned budget cuts would have, not only for us but for the entire, diverse Berlin cultural landscape that has developed over the years. Therefore, we urgently ask for your support to collectively resist these threatening cutbacks and to ensure the survival of Berlin's culture.
We are aware that the strained budget situation will not leave us untouched, but we firmly believe that art and culture, just like social welfare and education, must be particularly protected by the public sector. Art and culture are not only essential for Berlin's appeal, but they also actively foster social and societal cohesion. This is even more urgent in a situation where society is becoming increasingly divided and right-wing populist views are gaining traction.
The announced 13% budget cuts represent a significant threat to the entire Berlin cultural landscape. With a cultural budget that accounts for only 2.1% of the overall budget, these cuts are disproportionate and unjust. We at Tanzfabrik Berlin Bühne would also have to drastically reduce our program, bring fewer performances to the stage, and offer less support to the independent artists and groups with whom we have been working for years.
The Berlin dance scene, which is characterized by many decentralized venues, independent groups, and artists reliant on project funding, is especially at risk. A 13% cut in this already precariously positioned sector not only jeopardizes the artistic excellence for which Berlin is internationally known in dance but also threatens the few structures that support and represent this art form.
We encourage everyone to join this important call. Together, we still have a chance to raise our voices and create a future in which culture can thrive in Berlin. Sign the open letter from the Berlin chapter of the German Stage Association to the government representatives.
Together, we stand up for Berlin’s culture!
