Residenzen 2023

The application deadline for the residency for BIPoC* dancers and choreographers living in Berlin has been extended until 12.12.2022!
Tanzfabrik Berlin offers four artistic residencies for the year 2023.
Three of the residencies are thematically oriented, and one is dedicated to BIPoC dancers and choreographers as part of the project Emerging Change.

Applicants may choose one of the following topics when applying. Applications are possible as single person or as duo:
↪  1 residency on Sustainability and Feminism
↪  1 residence on Pausing / Rest
↪  1 residency on Community work / involvement of audiences
↪  1 residency for queer BIPoC artists as part of Emerging Change

For the Emerging Change residency call, please continue reading ↪ here.

↪ Who can apply for the thematic residencies?
Applications are welcome from dancers and choreographers living in Berlin (registration in Berlin required), regardless of age and origin, who are not enrolled at a university at the time of the residency (in dance or choreography studies) and do not receive another grant from the state of Berlin in the year of the residency. Applications are open as an individual or as a duo.
The thematically oriented residencies are conceived as artistic research. The focus should not be to develop a 'product' or a presentation, but to concentrate on the process of artistic research as such.

↪ What are the themes that I can apply for?

Sustainability and Feminism
In the light of growing inequality and climate crisis, we would like to invite artists to conduct artistic research from an eco-feminist perspective, on a thematic and / or methodological level. This residency can reflect ecological references and at the same time create space for the appliance and testing of feminist principles – in the sense of intersectionality and equity.

Pausing/Rest
Continuing the concept of "Pause as Resistance", which Tanzfabrik Berlin started to explore together with artists in May 2022, we would like to invite applicants who either thematically deal with pausing/resting as a subversive practice and/or would like to take a constructive break themselves from constraints such as permanent productivity, (self-)marketing, etc. in order to gain new strength or to reorient themselves in a new/different way.

Community work / involvement of audiences
We would also like to focus on artistic works that seek an open encounter with groups, communities or the audience on a horizontal level. We welcome therefore projects that encourage the active participation of people from the local area or Berlin region, be it in the form of political action, dance, transfer of knowledge or a creative process.

For your application, you should choose a theme that connects to your previous artistic work and that you would like to explore during the residency.

↪ What does each residency entail?
All three thematic residencies include
↪ four weeks of studio time in 2023
↪ mentoring and support from the Tanzfabrik Berlin team along the year in concept development, dramaturgy, production planning, partner research, and funding application if desired
↪ the opportunity to use the Tanzfabrik Berlin's presentation and feedback formats (e.g. Time to Meet)
↪ technical support
↪ a stipend (5.000 € per residency)
↪ a limited research budget

We look forward to receiving your application!
