Break Every Rule is the third iteration of our annual Love Workshop Series.
This workshop asks “What is the relationship between breaking rules, failure, and potential?“ and “What if failure is not the end, but the beginning?”We will engage with practical and fantastical queer love-centered collective survival skills toward collective thriving. We will cause trouble. We hold complexity. We will train skills in anticipation, reflexes, pre-kissing practices, collaboration vs. competition, physical and relational impact, collective body, sweating together, touch, space, tenderness, switching, bravery, transgression, quickie kind of love, and more. We will continue building skills for navigating around that which has potential to be fatal. We will pay attention to what rules actually exist. And then we will practice building and breaking explicit and secret rules in order to liberate our dancing/living. Break Every Rule is a re-entry into our ongoing research questions "What can we do together that we cannot do alone?" and “What is possible when love is stronger than fear?”
This will be a queer, trans, and BIPoC centered space. Through our intersectional identities, we will draw on contact improvisation, improvisation, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Feldenkrais®, Kung Fu, dance making, performance, imagination, relational practices, play, and activism. We invite you to take a journey with us — of falling in love — that changes us in ways that might give us more capacity in the world. We practice taking care as we traverse the complex and high-risk realities of being racialized and gendered bodies in relationship with one another.
Thank you, Tina Turner, for your song titles that continue to inspire our framing.
Accessibility Note
The workshop will be taught in spoken English and is open to all levels and abilities. There will be durational scored improvisational dancing practices that include physical contact, disorientation, momentum, impact, and resting. There will also be options/adaptations as needed. The research material includes building skills and practices of agency, consent, touch, positionality, generosity, endurance, risk-taking, decision-making, and collaboration. We will develop our individual and collective capacity through dancing and verbal discussion. If needed, a free workshop place for an accompanying assistant will be facilitated for participants with disabilities. Our studios are located on the first and second floors of a listed building with no lift and are therefore not wheelchair accessible.
