Workshop with Judith Sánchez Ruíz
In the frame of Winter Tanz 2014/15

This workshop will focus on exploring the relationship between set material and improvisation. It is based on “There is a Name for It” a choreographic collaborative duet created by Judith Sánchez Ruíz and Edivaldo Ernesto made in 2012. We will learn technical phrase material to get into the style of the piece and to feel comfortable enough to be able to decompose it and improvise in structured group improvisations. Then we will experiment with taking spontaneous insights by digging deeper into essential movement qualities of the work, both individually and as a group. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to be original, vulnerable and creative, through very strong physical movement material and group improvisations, and to develop a sense of dynamic in space through practice and research. It aims at experienced movers that seek to challenge their approach to improvisation and develop as performers.

Judith Sánchez Ruíz

The Berlin-based director, choreographer, teacher, improviser, Judith Sánchez Ruíz (CU- GE), was based in New York since 1999 and relocated to Berlin in 2011. She began her dance studies at the age of 11 at the National School of Arts. Ciudad de la Habana. Cuba. She has worked with Sasha Waltz & Guest, (2011-2014); Deborah Hay, (2012); Trisha Brown Dance Company, (2006-2009); DD Dorvillier, (2002, 2019); David Zambrano, (1997), Mal Pelo Company, (1997-1999); and DanzAbierta Company, (1991-1996). She established the JSR Company in NYC in 2010. She’s created numerous choreographic stage works and Site Specific and has initiated several improvisation projects involving live music with innovative composers and visual artist. Ms. Sanchez Ruiz has been a teacher and choreographer at major institutions of higher education in dance throughout Europe, US, Latin America and Asia.
