In the frame of Open Spaces/Sommer Tanz 2019
Bringing somatic techniques derived from Contact Improvisation together with compositional choice making practices found in Tuning Scores, this class will explore »inner and outer spaces«. We will land in our sensing bodies and create ensemble, solo and partner dances using scores that stimulate unbounded and embodied curiosity. With two unique and related systems – Material for the Spine (Steve Paxton) and Tuning Scores (Lisa Nelson) – we will dive deep and fast into the timeless body. MfS sensations include movements intertwining imagination and physicality, locating and distinguishing centers of mass, length, and reflexive balance in space. Tuning Scores, in unison with sensing, physicalizing seeing, partnering with the environment, and calibrating attentional/compositional desire, offers us »single image« medicine – an antidotal score to a busy world.
The workshop takes place in cooperation with Independent Dance (London), The Work Room (Glasgow) and Groundwork Pro (Cardiff).
Fr 19.7. 18:00 - 20:00 An inclusive Lecture-Demonstration-Participation-Jam-Event with Karen Nelson »Contact Improvisation interrogates its history and currency«.
Karen Nelson continues to be a crossroad of dance improvisation in the US’ Pacific Northwest and abroad. A long-time mutator of the form Contact Improvisation (CI), she co-founded mixed-ability experiments Dance Ability and Diverse Dance Research Retreat while later joining Lisa Nelson/ Image Lab’s developing of Tuning Scores for performance. She explores dance history and currency that centers intersections of practitioner experience and interrogates whiteness within her own embodiment and larger community, often collaborating with artists around the world. Her teaching approach brings classic origins of CI and Tuning through exercises, images, practice and discussion along with a view towards engendering individual possession and evolution of the forms through one’s own experience. explomov.weebly.com
