Learning From and Teaching Within Different Cultures

Talk by Koffi Kôkô, Christa Flaig-Isaacs
In the frame of Open Spaces/Sommer Tanz 2019

Focus of the talk will be on the impact and significance of Koffi’s teaching of people from different cultural backgrounds. In addition, emphasise will be given to the shared experiences of participants in this context.

Koffi Kôkô

Koffi Kôkô (FR/BJ) was born in Benin, West Africa, where he grew up in close contact with the animist religion of his home. In 2004 and 2005 he was curator and together with Johannes Odenthal artistic director of the festival In Transit (HKW, Berlin). With Ismael Ivo he choreographed and danced the play »The Maids« under the direction of Yoshi Oida. In addition to Koffi Kôkôs most important work u. a. »Passage«, »D’une rive à l'autre«, »Terre rougeâtre«, »Ça« and »Les feuilles qui résistent au vent«. He choreographed a.o. at the Kennedy Center in Washington, Barbican Center in London, Tanztheater Verena Weiss, Lucerne.

Christa Flaig-Isaacs

Christa Flaig-Isaacs, dancer,  pedagogue, project manager. The focus of her dance work is research on movement qualities in African dance and the possible meaning, adaptation and transformation for non-African dancers. For 35 years she has organised training courses and co-organised festivals for dance and cultural exchange in Europe and Africa. Curator of the event series "SommerTanz", "WinterTanz" and "OsterTanz" and financial manager, member of the board of Tanzfabrik Berlin from 2007-18.
