Drifting occurs whenever I do not respect the whole, and whenever, by dint of seeming driven about by language's illusions, seductions, and intimidations, like a cork on the waves, I remain motionless, pivoting on the intractable bliss that binds me to the text (to the world).

Roland Barthes‘ quote inspires this year‘s Studio 13 series of talks. Starting from Barthes‘ drifting pleasure, we move into the vastness of the Performing Arts. Several talks about topics such as technology, money and corporality will let us explore unexpected and unusual shores and develop visions to open up possible new paths.
Using means ranging from a brief performative encounter to a discussion about their individual and collaborative artistic practices, Julian Weber and Jeremy Wade, Berlin-based performers and performance makers, will reflect on different strategies of improvisation and how these can be used in contemporary artistic creation.

Studio 13 was initiated by curators Silke Bake and Jacopo Lanteri in 2015 with the aim to offer a space for exchange about working methods and interests in the field of performing arts. Concept 2018/19: Jacopo Lanteri, Curator/Dramaturg | Production: Jacopo Lanteri.

July Weber

July Weber (*1986, DE, all pronouns) is a choreographer*, dancer*, curator* and stage designer*. Weber studied sculpture at the HBK Braunschweig and the Academy of Arts Vienna, as well as choreography at the HZT Berlin and at the Theaterschool in Amsterdam. Over the last 15 years Weber has developed his own artistic signature, which explores the areas of friction between image, body and material for their choreographic potential. Weber won the Berlin Art Prize in 2015, was invited to the 2022 Dance Platform and has received various residencies and scholarships over the years. Weber founded NEW FEARS - a gallery for performance and transdisciplinarity and won the 2023 prize for project spaces in Berlin.

Jeremy Wade

Jeremy Wade is a performer, performance maker, curator and teacher. He graduated from the School For New Dance Development, Amsterdam in 2000. He premiered his first piece, “Glory” at Dance Theater Workshop, New York City in 2006, for which he received a Bessie Award. Since then, Wade has been living in Berlin and working closely with the HAU Hebbel am Ufer. His recent works include “Dark Material” (2013), with Sculptor Monika Grzymala and the band Xiu Xiu and “Together Forever” (2014), a three hour participatory practice / feast. In 2015 Wade created "Death Asshole Rave Video" and "DrawnOnward", both dealing with the death of man, zombie subjectivity and the precarious body situated in advanced capitalism.
