Gayle Tufts is a writer, singer and entertainer who feels at home in a wide variety of genres. Famous for her evenings that do not want to end and her verbal flourishes full of anecdotes, she continues to work today on the revitalization of the classic cabaret form, mixing music, comedy and choreogra- phy. In 1991, the U.S.-American artist was drawn to her new home of choice, Berlin, for the second time – and into the studios of Tanzfabrik on Möckernstraße. She dances, sings, directs and teaches. Gayle Tufts talks about her special combination of language, music and dance while looking back on her time working with Tanzfabrik.

Gayle Tufts
Gayle Tufts is an entertainer, author and singer/songwriter based in Berlin. Tufts was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. She received her BFA at New York University's Experimental Theater Wing, where she studied with choreographers Mary Overlie and Wendell Beavers. Tufts worked extensively with Anne Bogart, Yoshiko Chuma and the School of Hard Knocks, David Gordon/Pick Up Co. and Dancenoise. In 1990, Tufts relocated to Berlin to work with Tanzfabrik as performer, director and teacher. Since then she has established herself as a reknowned and critically acclaimed entertainer and intercultural contributor in Deutschland. Stern Magazine calls her “Germany’s best-known American.“ She has written and produced her own hit shows in theaters, festivals and opera houses throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as appearing frequently on television and radio. She has broken through the language barrier by presenting her work in "Dinglish" a comical mix of German and English. Her shows are based on her own experiences and observations of everyday life as an Ausländerin (foreigner) in Berlin and are a celebration of German-American Friendship, in all its complexity. Her most recent book „American Woman: How I lost my Heimat and found my Zuhause“ was published in 2017 by Aufbau Verlag.
