At close Distance

apap production studio berlin · Premiere by Christina Ciupke, Ayşe Orhon
In the frame of Open Spaces/Sommer Tanz 2017

"When you come closer, all my senses are caught by the intensity of your physical presence. When you retreat, the impact of our encounter remains. As the distance between us increases, my focus shifts from looking to imagining. The attention is bridging the space between us."

Christina Ciupke and Ayse Orhon excavate the impossible past of a physical encounter. The performance takes its point of departure from the duet “kannst du mich umdrehen” which Christina Ciupke and Nik Haffner developed in 2011. The two duets, both performed by Christina Ciupke and Ayse Orhon, are presented in a double bill. The new work in which two individuals are on a journey back and forth through their kinesthetic memories, is accompanied by the previous work, which is a physical confrontation of two entities working in intense proximity.

Performance: Christina Ciupke, Ayse Orhon | Artistic advice: Nik Haffner | Outside Eye: Felix Marchand | Light: Martin Beeretz | Production dramaturgy: Barbara Greiner | Press/PR: Lilly Schofield | Production: A lot of body GbR | Coproduction: Tanzfabrik Berlin, funded by Senatsverwaltung Kultur und Europa. Christina Ciupke

Christina Ciupke (she/her) is a Berlin-based choreographer/performer. She develops projects in cross-media collaborations. Specific situations are created in which proximity and distance, a sense of time and the togetherness of spectators and performers are negotiated. She has worked with the choreographers Nik Haffner, Mart Kangro, Jasna L. Vinovrški, Ayşe Orhon, dramaturge Igor Dobričić and composer Boris Hauf. Her works include the projects «Silent Trio» (2020-21) and «Take me somewhere nice» (2022-24) with visual artist and performer Darko Dragičević.. www.christinaciupke.com

Ayşe Orhon

Ayşe Orhon, Bosnian descent, born in Boston, grew-up in Istanbul, is a performer and choreographer recently based in Berlin. She is a graduate of Artez (HKA) in 2001 and the Master of Choreography program in Amsterdam (AHK) with her research "Permeable Manifestations" in 2013. Orhon performed her works in diverse festivals in Europe such as Can You Repeat? (2007), hava (2009), ÇOK (2010), folk (2011), thinging (2013); where the audience members eventually became the only actors of the event.  Recently she has facilitated a project together with Litó Walkey for Houseclub in HAU (Fearless Listening). Open Spaces knows her from her previous collaboration with Christina Ciupke (At Close Distance).  The common interest in her choreographic works and also teaching, is working with collective presences and a practice of creating a perturbation both in perception and action. In other words, as she is working with movement, sound and text, her focus is on zones between familiar and unfamiliar, between knowing and not knowing, creating a sense of expansion of space and time where the borders are blurred, the thin lines not being able to name where one entity ends and the other starts.
