S-7 / Sensing, Dancing, Performing

Workshop with Jess Curtis / Gravity († 11.03.2024)
In the frame of Open Spaces/Sommer Tanz 2017

In this workshop we will work from the most basic building blocks of experience, unpacking sensation, perception, impulse, affect, cognition, reflex, and reaction in order to create more space between them in which to locate our performing skills. Layering synesthetic sensory-motor skill sets we will ground in and surf through twisting topologies of flesh and blood to enact perceptual acrobatics that bring us into new dimensions of world. Is freedom the state of having choices, or a state beyond choosing? We will look at both possibilities, smash them together to see what kind of messy realities we can construct for ourselves. We will work in the sweaty modes of physical performance where weight, breath, momentum, desire and adrenalin intervene in conceptual structures to create pleasure, satisfaction and a rich range of performing experience.

People of diverse physicalities are very welcome and encouraged to attend. Wheelchair accessible studio.

22.7. Talk with Jess Curtis, Bea Carolina Remark and Bernhard Richarz.

Jess Curtis / Gravity († 11.03.2024)

Jess Curtis died unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, in San Francisco.

Gravity creates exceptionally engaging body-based art that physically addresses issues and ideas of relevance to anyone with a body. The company was founded in 2000 by choreographer-director Jess Curtis, whose work ranges from the underground extremes of San Francisco warehouse performances with such iconic companies as Contraband and CORE in the 1980s, to the exuberance of French circus tents with Compagnie Cahin-Caha, and the refinement of state theaters in Berlin, London, Glasgow, and other major cultural centers. Gravity’s innovative, accessible, and experimental work consistently engages with issues of embodied diversity including gender, sexuality, and disability.
