“DUB” – Waacking and Indian Dance Styles & Music

Workshop with Sangram Mukhopadhyay
In the frame of Summer/ing at Tanzfabrik

The international festival Tanz im August presents “DUB” by Amala Dianor on 23.+24.8.2024. The vibrant dance production celebrates the exuberant creativity of urban dance, an dynamic conglomerate of art forms that have developed on the streets, in subcultures, and on the internet. Two of the dancers, Kgotsofalang Joseph Mavundla and Sangram Mukhopadhyay, will share their unique artistic dance practices with us in two different workshops.

Waacking, a 70s Los Angeles Gay club dance style, comes closest to describe Sangram’s form and articulation of the body. Sangram Mukhopadhyay shall be offering a workshop investigating the gestural genealogy of arm movement combining hastas (arm gestures rooted in Indian neo-classical dance forms) and hand performance (circular motion of the upper limbs annotated in Waacking amongst other club styled cultures).

Sangram Mukhopadhyay

With a clubbing background, Sangram Mukhopadhyay is an Indian dancer based in Calcutta. Involved in the Queer community, Sangram takes part in numerous projects. Curious and emancipated, this dancer offers audiences a generous and original dance, blurring gender boundaries and fusing traditional Indian dances with voguing, electro or waacking. With him, you can embark on another world where benevolent creatures draw you into a shared, joyful dance.
