The international festival Tanz im August presents “DUB” by Amala Dianor on 23.+24.8.2024. The vibrant dance production celebrates the exuberant creativity of urban dance, an dynamic conglomerate of art forms that have developed on the streets, in subcultures, and on the internet. Two of the dancers, Kgotsofalang Joseph Mavundla and Sangram Mukhopadhyay, will share their unique artistic dance practices with us in two different workshops.
Pantsula dance emerged in South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s as a response to the forced removals implemented by the apartheid government and began as informal street dance competitions. Pantsula was used as an expression of resistance during the political struggle then occurring against the apartheid government, as well as being used to spread awareness about social issues. After the end of apartheid in 1994, pantsula has become a symbol of South African youth culture and a way for young people to express their identity and creativity.
