Afro Fusion: Urban & Club African Dances

In the frame of Summer/ing at Tanzfabrik

In this Afro Fusion workshop, you will immerse yourself in a fascinating world full of vibrant dance styles: Azonto (Ghana), Ndombolo (Congo), Coupé Décalé (Côte d'Ivoire), Amapiano (South Africa), Afro House (Angola) and Jazzé (Gabon). Discover the art of harmoniously combining these different dance steps and creating sequences that capture the essence of each style. During this intense experience, you will not only learn the complex steps, but also build a deeper connection to the essence of each dance. The workshop celebrates movement and the diversity of cultures, with an emphasis on musicality, fluidity of movement, technique and rich cultural heritage. Be ready for an engaging and dynamic workshop that will leave you energized and enriched.

Accessibility Note
The workshop will be held in spoken English, follow-up questions for clarification and group discussions about the exercises can also be in German/French. The class will involve working in pairs and fast choreographic sequences as well as offering room for experimentation. Not all movements will be verbalized in detail. Loud, bass-heavy music will be used. Coordination and combination exercises and movement phrases to remember will be part of the workshop. If needed, a free workshop place for an accompanying assistant will be facilitated for participants with disabilities. Luana Madikera

Luana Madikera is a dancer and multidisplinary artist. She is a member of the tropical band "La By'le and of the FemBlack performance collective as well as a dance educator. Within her pedagogical journey, Luana's expertise shines through her knowledge of urban African dance forms. Luana's knowledge has been meticulously cultivated through a fusion of self-taught prowess and immersive workshops and training (Ghana, École des Sables, Senegal). What truly sets Luana apart is her profound sensitivity, pedagogical finesse, and a sense of humor that infuses joy into her teachings. Her classes and workshops are drenched in Afro-centric wisdom, beautifully accentuating the connection to unique body movements, the grounding connection to the earth, an intuitive feel for the music's pulse, and a deep recognition of the dances' social significance.
