The Urge of Being is a group-based training and creative process of movement and dance, physical theatre, vocal training (body-voice), composition and dramaturgy. Two pillars of the training are the plastique sequence and body-voice training of J. Grotowski's training, transmitted to Daniela by Peter Rose.

The driving force of this project is urgency, understood as an unconditional urge to survive at any level. The work invites performers to consciously generate their own urge by working with the body's internal impulses, in a dynamic and give and take mode. Urgency manifests itself as a condition of physical, emotional and spiritual off-balance, a condition in which the artist continually negotiates their own presence and scenic actions in adaptive dialogue with the outside world, channelling the survival impulses to the performative action. This condition is called Artistic Survival Mode.

Voice is integrated in movements and dance, it is generated by body resonators and vibrates through the whole organism. One of the objectives of this training is to build energetic processes able to bring the text and voice into the body, to let the text and voice be embodied and fluidly orchestrated within movements.

During the second part of the project, we will be scoring impulses: we’ll create maps of our energetic processes annotating the body parts involved, the type of vocality, the quality of movement and emotional states. This map will be the dramaturgical score for the showing at the end of the project.

This series of classes are situated in the intersection between science and art. They are aimed at researching individual and group processes that make our human bodies conscious about our inescapable relationship with the environment. Each session begins with a scientific notion of evolutionary biology, deep ecology,  neuroscience or ethology. Scientific topics will be: the characteristics of human perception, the evolution and roles of the nervous system, the role of emotions, feelings and embodiment, etc., and main reference scientists will be Damasio, Maturana, Capra, Pert, James, etc. Starting from these initial scientific notions, movement exercises, vocal work, individual and group improvisational scores, approaches to imagination, perception and sensory experiences will be proposed, with the aim to perceive new insights of our ecological and performative being.
