From Breath to Movement to Context, and back

Workshop with Lisa Densem, Miriam Jakob, Jana Unmüßig
In the frame of HerbstTanz 2023

In Cooperation with HzT – Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin, the 4 day workshop with dance/choreography artists Lisa Densem, Miriam Jakob and Jana Unmüßig, addresses breathing in its many facets in the context of performance, choreography and artistic research.

We invite participants with different artistic practices to delve into breath: breathing as an experiential practice, tuning into the changing rhythms and sensations of the breath; and breathing as subject matter, a lens through which to think and ponder. In the mornings we will engage in different body based practices related to breath, voice and touch, working in particular with the bodywork BreathExperience - a breath work based on the work of Ilse Middendorf. In the afternoons we will consider breath in relation to artistic practice, expanding from the experiential morning work into form making, context and crafting. The afternoon sessions will move between different modalities, between tasks and exercises related to improvisation, composition and performance, mini-lectures on artists working with breath in different artistic fields, and reading sessions where we share texts related to breath that have been influential for our own artistic processes.

Accessibility Note
The workshop is open for participants with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Please bring comfortable clothes for moving. Self touch and touch is an integral part of the teaching proposal. The workshop is held in English spoken language, with possible interpretation in German. The workshop will take place in Uferstudios in Berlin Wedding, in Studio 3 (5-6.10.) & Studio11 (7-8.10.). Both studios are accessible without steps, but have a raised wooden floor area, which is accessible via a 1.5% sloping feeder ramp. A barrier-free WC with shower (2.6 m x 2.1 m, door width is 0.95 m) is in the foyer of studios 3, 4 and 5 and can be accessed without steps. Information on how to get there and precise directions here. If needed, a free workshop space for an accompanying assistant will be facilitated for participants with disabilities. For questions or more information, please contact Zoé Duflot & Elisabeth Leopold at workshop@tanzfabrik-berlin.de.

Lisa Densem

Lisa Densem is a New Zealand born performer, choreographer and breath practitioner who has worked a.o. with Sasha Waltz, Laurent Chetouane, Sandra Man, Sergiu Matis and Jana Unmüssig. Her own work and teaching has for many years been directed towards the connected-ness, presence, and well-being of the dancing body – research that brought her to the breathwork BreathExperience (based on the work of Ilse Middendorf) and, eventually, to graduating as a breath practitioner in 2019. Since graduating, she has been experimenting with merging her two practices, dance performance and breathwork, exploring how breath can open new perspectives within a dance context. Lisa is a graduate of the MA Soda programme at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT Berlin).

Miriam Jakob

Miriam Jakob, a Berlin-based choreographer, performer, and artistic researcher, explores representation, accessibility, and inter-species communication through her work. With a focus on personal narratives, socio-political issues, and ecological concerns, her choreography spans installations, film, and collaborative stage productions. Notable projects include "Breathing With" alongside Jana Unmüßig and Lisa Densem, and the ongoing interdisciplinary endeavor "Den Berg Hören – Choreografien des Zerfallens". Miriam holds an MA in Choreography from the Theaterschool of Amsterdam, a BA in Dance, Context, Choreography from HZT, and an MA in Anthropology from FU. She is also an active member of Berlin's ALTES Finanzamt e.V. queer feminist collective.

Jana Unmüßig

Jana Unmüßig is an artist, choreographer and artist-researcher based in Helsinki. The Berlin Artistic Research Grant Program (2020-2021) was leading to a joint project "Breathing With," which also involved Miriam Jakob and Lisa Densem. Jana's qualifications include a D.E.U.G (arts du spectacle) from Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Paris (2002), dance and choreography training at SEAD (2008), an MA in choreography from HZT (2010), and a D.A. from Theater Academy (Teak) of Uniarts Helsinki (2018). She was a post-doc at the Center for Artistic Research Uniarts Helsinki (2019/2020) and now lectures in choreography at Teak/Uniarts Helsinki. Shifting from freelancing during her doctorate, Jana explores nuanced ways of artistic creation, focusing on intangibility and alternative forms. She balances her time between teaching, research, and parenthood (with two children, aged 5 and 9).
