Practicing Dance Together #3

Dancing with Dragana Alfirević, Dejan Srhoj, Darío Barreto Damas, Hilla Steinert
In the frame of TO KEEP IN TOUCH ...

Mapping the Unknown

In this co-led dance practice, Dragana Alfirević, Darío Barreto Damas, Dejan Srhoj and Hilla Steinert share their personal experience working with Deborah Hay. For each of them, the opportunity to work with Deborah Hay has been a profound learning experience. Her approach is an affirmation of dance as a daily practice. The exploration of form and format becomes a fluid process of perception in which the individual dance merges with an open-ended sense of collectiveness. Possible readings of her practice are infinite - firm and fluid at the same time. The unknown is a space to inhabit.
Hilla Steinert participated in Hay`s second four-month group workshop that culminated in large public performances in 1982. Hay had planted a seed still present in Steinert`s work.
Darío Barreto Damas was involved in Deborah´s piece “Figure a Sea,” which was created in 2015 and has been performed until recently.
Since 2017 Dragana and Dejan, in the context of Nomad Dance Academy in Slovenia, have been in conversation with Deborah about the possibilities of collaboration. Since 2022 they have been working with her on a performance. Recently, they have organised an event dedicated to her work and many collaborators throughout the years.

Dragana is the co-founder of the international contemporary dance platform Nomad Dance Academy (NDA) and the Belgrade-based STATION – Service for contemporary dance and the now defunct Kondenz Contemporary Dance Festival. She has been living in Ljubljana since 2007, working closely as programmer, initiator, curator and performer with different organisations and artists, especially with the Nomad Dance Academy Slovenia and CoFestival.

Dejan Srhoj

Since 2001 he works as a freelancer, and is one of the founding members of Fičo Ballet, in the frame of which, together with Goran Bogdanovski, he has performed or collaborated on many performances. He is co-founder and active member of regional Nomad Dance Academy network. As a performer he a.o. worked with Janez Janša, Ivica Buljan, Sebastijan Horvat, Betontanc, Magdalena Reiter, Silvan Omerzu, Kaja Lorenci, Snježana Premuš. Between 1998 and 2001 he was a soloist at the SNG Opera and Ballet in Ljubljana. Within the frame of the NDA network, he researches innovative (co-)teaching methods. Darío Barreto Damas

Darío Barreto Damasis a Canarian freelance dancer who works in the field of dance and choreography. He works simultaneously in Stockholm, Sofia, Skopje and Tenerife. His artistic work revolves around the emancipation and autonomy of dance as a form of knowledge and the decontextualization and disidentification as artistic mediation mechanisms. He studied at the Teatro Victoria, Institut del Teatre and DOCH. He is currently studying a Master in Choreography and Performance at Justus-Liebig-Universität, Giessen, directed by Bojana Kunst. Darío has worked as a dancer, co-creator and collaborator with Cullberg, (with productions by Édouard Lock, Deborah Hay and Jefta van Dinther), Cristina Caprioli, Ofelia Jarl Ortega, Aleksandar Georgiev and Philip Berlin among others. Hilla Steinert

Hilla Steinert moves at the interface between dance and performance. She started dancing in 1978. In 1981, she met Deborah Hay`s work in Austin, USA, which had a lasting impact on her own process. After training as a movement and dance teacher she turned to performance in 1986 and began to develop her method of Free Dance, in which all her own experience of dancing, teaching and choreographing is incorporated. From 1999 - 2004 she completed training as a dance therapist at the Frankfurt Institute for Dance Therapy. She is particularly interested in the basis of dance-based creativity, to develop clarity through expression through simplicity and authenticity, which is the prerequisite for any exciting performance.
