Vibrant Body

Kurs with Soroa Lear, Sarah Butler

In my practice I am interested in uncovering and expanding the infinite universe living within each unique and individual body. By breaking down the body into its layers of skin, flesh and bone, we can create more space within the container of our body and radiate beyond its borders and limits. The isolation of different body structures allows for increased physical awareness and a growing sense of possibilities within our physicality. The practice builds up to a place where the body can operate as a whole by connecting all the layers within itself while still allowing for space to exist between them.Throughout the practice we surrender to the groove and vibrations we receive from music and allow ourselves to be taken by and merge with it. My practice draws inspiration from Sidra Bell’s methodology, Gaga, Dose of Pleasure by Alvin Collantes and my personal choreographic work among others.

Soroa Lear

Soroa Lear is a Cuban-American dancer, performer and writer based in Berlin. She completed her studies in contemporary dance and comparative literature at Reed College, which sparked her interest in the intersections between critical theory and movement. In her practice, she explores the ways in which movement can enable a reordering of our subjectivity, allowing relationality, pleasure, and physical affect to determine our understanding of the self. In this centering of sensation, there lies the potential to become ‘undone’; to experience the body outside of its linguistic and subjected identity, and instead through bodily sensation. Her practice is heavily influenced by Gaga, contact improvisation and Berlin's nightclub culture - something she was able to practice and study thanks to a research grant she received in 2019. She has performed and worked with Oriantheater, Sebastian Abarbanell, Nora Tormann, and Søren Siebel amongst others. Her written works have been published by Penny Press and Confluence Journal.

Sarah Butler

Sarah Butler likes making things. Working with movement, embroidery, poetry, film, wearable structure, and vocal harmonies, she is interested in exploring how the weaving of seemingly separate mediums can result in something surprising and honest.Sarah trained primarily in classical ballet growing up, and graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA with a BFA in Dance in 2012. She was a founding member of Danielle Agami’s Ate9 Dance Company in Los Angeles from 2012 – 2020. Since 2018, Sarah has worked closely with Tom Weinberger, assisting on the creation of dance-theatre works in and around Europe. She has been a guest teacher with Iceland Dance Company, Nagelhus Schia Productions, Cornish College of the Arts, California Institute of the Arts, John Hopkins University, and Ryan Heffington’s The Sweat Spot, among others. Sarah relocated to Berlin from the States in early 2023 and is happy to be here. (www.kickinbutler.com)
