Ballet

Kurs with Yuri Shimaoka

In this ballet class, we learn the foundation of ballet movements from a somatic approach, in an organic and effective manner. Drawing insights from somatic dance practices, Budo (Japanese martial arts), basic Newtonian physics, endocrine system, TCM, and more, we explore how our bodies organize themselves physically and emotionally, discovering the body as a collective organization. Additionally, we practice finding ways to liberate ourselves with the established structure by using, playing, and relating to it. Sometimes Britney Spears or techno beats appear and let us experience vibrations physically, recognizing the interconnectedness of memory and emotion and reminding us of the joy of dancing.

Yuri believes that the beauty of ballet is not only coming from its severity and preserveness but also from the enormous wisdom behind it. She is more than happy to explore it together with you.

Yuri Shimaoka

Yuri Shimaoka is a dancer, ballet teacher and Shiatsu practitioner from Japan. She has trained in dance drawing from different sources, from ballet school to studying Japanese martial arts Budo from master Akira Hino, to visiting The Forsythe Company and assisting Yoko Ando, former dancer in the company.

Since 2015 she has been based in Berlin and collaborating with various artists in screen, VR, installation and dance. She has worked with Yoko Ando and YCAM InterLab, Okwui Okpokwasilli (10th Berlin Biennale), Matteo Marziano Graziano, Jeremy Shaw, IASA, Rob Fordeyn, Ersan Mondtag, Moritz Majce among others. Yuri is one of the co-founders of an artist-bodyworkers collective "Considering", where the members experiment economical mutual support and practice co-regulation and politics of care (www.considering.network). As a guest teacher, she has been giving ballet classes with a somatic approach in open dance studios and schools, experimenting with ways of drawing a collective healing process.
